Nigeria–Palestine relations refer to foreign relations between Nigeria and the State of Palestine.
Nigeria supports a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.[1] Abu Shawesh is the Palestinian Ambassador in Nigeria.[2] Nura Abba Rimi is the ambassador of Nigeria to Palestine based in Egypt.[3]
History
Nigeria recognized Palestinian statehood on 18 November 1988.[4] Nigeria has voted in favor of Palestine at the United Nations.[5]
In 2012, Nigeria voted in favor of Palestine becoming a non-member observer at the United Nations, member of UNESCO, but voted against full member status at the United Nations.[6][7]
Goodluck Jonathan, President of Nigeria, visited Palestine and Israel in 2014.[5] The Supreme Council for Shari'ah in Nigeria and its president Sheikh Abdur-Rasheed Hadiyatullah criticized the government of Israel for the killing of innocents during the 2023 Israel-Hamas war.[8] Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission suspended activities due to the war.[8] The Islamic Movement in Nigeria called on the government to sever ties with Israel over the war.[9] Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs called for a ceasefire.[10] Christian Association of Nigeria and Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria called for Nigeria to maintain neutrality.[11] Abdallah Abu Shawesh, Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Nigeria, sought support from Nigeria to end the war.[12] Nigeria cancelled a trip by Prime Minister Petr Fiala of Czech Republic over his stance on the war and voting against a ceasefire.[13]
