Kariéra

Pôsobí ako výkonný riaditeľ American Council for United Nations University (AC/UNU). Je riaditeľom najväčšieho futurologického projektu na svete projektu The Millennium Project of AC/UNU, Washington, D.C., USA. Je spoluautor každoročne vydávanej správy State of the Future a editorom dvoch verzií Future Research Methodology. Zaoberá sa metodológiou prognózovania. Vytvoril koncept postinformačného veku a vedomej technológie.

Postinformačný vek a vedomá technológia

Koncept postinformačného veku a vedomej technológie vytvoril Jerome C. Glenn vo svojej knihe Future Mind: Artificial Intelligence. Merging the Mystical and Technological in the 21st Century (1989). Jerome C. Glenn uvádza, že futurológovia inklinujú k deleniu ľudskej histórie na agrárny, industriálny a informačný vek. Každý vek a každú kultúru definujú cez ich primárne aktivity. Tieto veky a kultúry tiež majú tendenciu mať svoje konkurenčné zdroje sociálnej moci, bohatstva, miesta práce a vnímania času.

Dnes podľa Glenna vyspelé národy završujú prechod od industriálneho k informačnému veku. Prvé znaky postinformačného veku sú sotva viditeľné, ale predznačujú objavenie sa nového veku a civilizácie, ktorá môže byť anticipovaná. Technologické trendy v mikrominiaturizácii, komunikáciach, hlasovom rozpoznávaní a syntéze, umelej inteligencii, ľudskej interaktivite so softwarom, biotechnológii, genetickom inžinierstve, bionike a vyrobených predmetoch so zabudovanou inteligenciou by mali pokračovať a stať sa vo vzrastajúcej miere vzájomne sa posilujúcimi.

Sociálne trendy vo verejnej participácii, globalizácii, demokracii, celoživotnom vzdelávaní a stupni vedeckého bádania a zvedavosti by tiež mali pokračovať a stať sa vo vzrastajúcej miere vzájomne sa posilujúce. Interakcia týchto sociálnych a technologických trendov v ďalšom storočí vytvorí postinformačný vek tvrdí Jerome Glenn. Podľa Glenna budeme v postinformačnom veku tak integrovaní s technológiou, tak ako bude technológia integrovaná s nami. Vzdialenosti medzi ľuďmi a strojmi budú miznúť. Ľudstvo a inteligentná technológia sa stanú vzájomne previazaným celkom. Vytvorené prostredie bude vyzerať ako živé s umelou inteligenciou, komunikáciami, hlasovým rozpoznávaním a syntézou. Naše telá budú rozšírené prostredníctvom technológie a vzájomne prepojené s globálnou civilizáciou. Postinformačný vek sa stane vedomou technológiou a spojitosťou ľudského vedomia a technológie.
