Czech - American TV (also known as CATVUSA) is a non-profit charitable organization formed under section 501(c)(3), broadcasting educational programs aimed at promoting Czech heritage and culture. Their object is simmilar to the PBS.[1] Founded in 2003 by John Honner, an American television producer of Czech origin, the network provides a unique platform dedicated to Central European culture and heritage, offering informative content about Czech regions, traditions, history, cuisine, and events. [2]

History

The inspiration behind Czech-American TV stemmed from John Honner's exposure to ORF - Austrian television program ("Hello Austria - Hello Vienna") and American TV magazine (Rick Steves´ Europe). Drawing from these influences, Honner established the organization to create a show focused exclusively on the Czechs. [3] Czech-American TV is broadcast in several states in the USA, reaching over 6 million viewers.

Mission

The mission of Czech-American TV is to support cultural heritage and educational programs through television and Internet platforms.[4] Czech-American TV became the first and only program of its kind in the United States, catering not only to the Czech-American community but also to anyone interested in the regions of Czech republic. [5]

Programming

Czech - American TV offers a diverse range of programs, including:

  • Discover Czech Regions
  • Exploring Czech lands
  • Czech Landmarks
  • Czech Monuments
  • Czech Cooking
  • Czech Traditions
  • Famous Czechs

All programs are presented in English language to ensure accessibility to a broader audience. [1]

Online Presence

Czech-American TV reaches audiences beyond cable television through its website (CATVUSA.com), which offers web streaming services. The website serves as a popular destination for Czech descendants across the United States, as well as for individuals interested in travel shows, culinary experiences, and cultural exploration.

Mascot

The organization’s mascot, Czech John (Cesky Honza), embodies the spirit of Czech folklor, representing resilience and triumph in the face of adversity. Honza's journey mirrors the traditional Czech fairy tale narrative, symbolizing the perseverance and intelligence of the Czechs. [6]

Headquarters

Czech-American TV is headquartered in Illinois, with branches in Florida, Texas, and California. The network's team members are dispersed across various states in the United States, as well as in Europe. Czech-American TV cooperates with many European and American universities. [7]

Czech-American TV's original audio jingles are based on melodies from renowned Czech classical composers, Bedrich Smetana's (The Moldau) and Antonin Dvorak's (New World Symphony).[8] During 2015, the organization underwent a visual rebranding, transitioning to a new look reflected on its website and promotional materials.[1]
